Blood diamonds refer to illegally traded diamonds that are used to monetarily support war in Africa. These diamonds began to surface in the late 1990’s in Sierra Leone. African communities dig in mines in hope of finding diamonds that a lot of the times are smuggled illegally to members of the government. At the peak of their production, they accounted for about four percent of the world’s diamond production. African rebels are gaining control over larger territories by commanding the discovery and production of the diamond mines. These diamonds have begun to spread throughout Africa, fueling conflict in various countries. This, in turn, makes blood diamonds and conflict diamonds synonymous. Though conflict diamonds give rise to a small portion of positive economic gain, they fund and support a violent environment across Africa that needs to come to an end.

the kimberley process

The Kimberley Process started when Southern African diamond-producing states met in Kimberley, South Africa, in May 2000, to discuss ways to stop the trade in ‘conflict diamonds' and ensure that diamond purchases were not financing violence by rebel movements and their allies seeking to undermine legitimate governments.

Blood diamond workers, are labors that extract diamonds produced in the area controlled by rebel forces that are opposed to internationally recognized government.

Their subduers are rebel groups. Theses rebel groups sell the diamonds to fund invading army’s war efforts, weaponry, and insurgencies in war-torn areas.

Most customers don’t even know where the diamonds they bought come from. 20% of the sold diamonds were used for illegal purpose some years ago.

Worldwide, hundreds of thousands of children under 18 have been affected by armed conflict. Girls and boys illegally and under force, participate in combat where often they are injured or killed. Others are used as spies, messengers, porters, & servants - they are called child soldiers.

Stopping blood diamonds will help stop child slavery, by cutting off illegal diamond trade & preventing the finance from the diamonds to continue the war. It will also help prevent any more war involving the rebels. The first step to helping this serious issue is to educate people on it and to spread the word.
